Amanda & Simon

Amanda and Simon chose a great way to get prepared for their wedding day at Broadoaks Country House Hotel – by having a mini holiday, surrounded friends and family in the North-West’s beautiful Lake District. At the end of this holiday came the special day retold in photographs below…

After a relaxed round of bridal preparations at Amanda’s holiday house, we moved onto Broadoaks where she could get into her amazing dress; look out for Simon, Dad and the guest’s expressions as Amanda walked down the aisle – I love them and think these say it all about how she looked!

The rain which had interrupted the group photos earlier had given way to some evening sunshine which gave us the opportunity to head out for bridal portraits, beginning the session on the hotel’s helipad/lawn (when we saw the sign, we thought it might be a joke but you really can land a helicopter here!) before taking a stroll around the gardens. When we met in May for the pre-wedding shoot, I felt Amanda and Simon had found what worked well for them when it came to portraits and it seemed to me that they picked up where they left off to make these beautiful portraits.

After the wedding, I was so happy to be called ‘The 5th bridesmaid’ by Amanda; she wasn’t sure which way it’d go down but I love it and reminds me of how involved I was in such a special day!

Congratulations Amanda & Simon, thank you for letting me be a part of your day!

Gemma & Joe

Every one of these blogs that I post begins as a list of words summing up the day before it’s fleshed out with prose; this blog post started life as ‘bunting, puppies, new born baby, Bob Dylan, dance off’; an intriguing set of phrases I never thought I’d be using to start reporting this relaxed, unique wedding set deep in the Sussex countryside!

Arriving a bit too early for bridal preparations in Brighton meant I could soak up the sunshine and listen to the seagulls (the flying ones, not the football-kicking ones) before getting down to photo-taking-business of Gemma, her bridesmaids and flower girls. While Powder & Pin got busy with their hair and make up talents, the pretty bunting adorning the lounge gave me the opportunity to make one of my favourite images of the day (Gemma’s shoes) which happily tied in with the flowers and the bunting decorating Gemma and Joe’s venue at Barcombe.

At the pub, the sun did what it does best and shone throughout the service on the lawn while Gemma’s brother-in-law conducted the ceremony with such mastery and authority that I wondered for a moment if he did this for a living! After Gemma and Joe tied walked down the aisle, guests gathered for drinks on the banks of the River Ouse while I set about taking some unposed, natural photos of all the good times going on.

When we met in May, Gemma and Joe told me about all the games planned and knew these, along with the bouncy castle, would make for great photos – I’m not entirely sure what the bat, ball and strange wooden device game was called but it provided hours of entertainment and intense moments! Apart from the wedding breakfast and speeches, the rest of the day was spent outside where there were the aforementioned puppies and the youngest guest I’ve ever seen at a wedding at just one day old!

The sun set in spectacular fashion and we could break out the sparklers before heading into the marque for the first dance to Bob Dylan followed by a flamboyant dance off between the bridesmaids and the groomsmen. This was a such a fun, laid back day for everyone and I feel so honoured to have been a part of it; thank you so much for having me.

Congratulations Gemma & Joe, thank you for letting me be a part of your day!

The Pinewood Hotel, Handforth, Cheshire Wedding Photography ~ Dan Barlow

Kaz & Jon

I feel rather blessed being able to work alongside so many fabulous people on some of the most important days of their lives. Kaz and Jon are no exception to this rule – ever since they got in touch earlier this year, I’ve known that they would be awesome to work alongside and it has certainly been the case for their special day at the Pinewood Hotel in Handforth.

The photography started at Kaz’s Mum’s house where I spent the morning capturing some very relaxed preparations; there was even time between hair and make up (and champagne) for Kaz to present her bridesmaids with some very pretty necklaces with Jon’s daughter receiving an extra special one to mark the occasion.

Over at the Pinewood Hotel, I was greeted by Jon whose nerves just melted away as he first saw his daughter, then wife-to-be walk down the aisle. After the ceremony, guests were given balloons to release which was a really fun way to begin the group photos and get everyone out into the sunshine. Guests were then treated to entertainment from mind bendingly good magician Alan Hudson and talented caricature artist Mike Bryson while Kaz, Jon and I picked up what we were doing when we were last here and took in the gardens for their bridal portraits.

After the speeches came the part I had been really looking forward to. I’ve been a Northern Uproar fan since I was 14 so meeting the band then seeing them play live that evening was a massive pleasure and well worth staying around for. Leon Meya was on top form with his band, keeping the dance floor filled all night, a rare skill that you don’t see that often and one which made this an incredible night for everyone involved. Thanks for having me along, please find a few of my favourite documentary wedding photographs below.

Congratulations Kaz & Jon, thank you for letting me be a part of your day!

Rachael & Toby

Rachael and Toby’s Tatton Park wedding was always going to be one which I looked forward to, it was just a case of how to make the most of it while not holding up the wedding day! Arriving before anyone else gave me a chance to appreciate again what a beautiful, elegant wedding venue Tatton Park is – a grand house situated in fastidiously maintained grounds, perfect for a memorable wedding day. Having dashed in to avoid the rain, Rachael walked down the aisle with both of her parents and Toby’s face lit up, all signs of his previous nerves now long gone! Following the ceremony, the wedding party moved upstairs to Lord Egerton’s Apartment for Champagne and canapes when suddenly, the rain stopped and there was the task of moving 80 people outside for a group shot, something made so much easier with the help of Toby’s friends and the helpful staff of Tatton Park. All that was left to do was steal Rachael and Toby away for portraits around the grounds before it was time to move onto the reception in Bowdon Rugby Club’s Marquee Room. The party there was so good, I ended up staying on a bit longer than anticipated…

Congratulations Rachael & Toby, thank you for letting me be a part of your day!

Crewe Hall, Cheshire Wedding Photography ~ Dan Barlow

Hayley & Afshin

There isn’t an old expression which goes “An amazing wedding starts with a thunderstorm” but I really think there should be as you’ll see from the wedding of Hayley and Afshin held at the grand Crewe Hall. Predictably from my opening comment, the weather was not ideal but the venue was a perfect backdrop, indoors and out, for the wedding of a beautiful couple. After a father of the bride speech (involving an inflatable dolphin,) we did manage to get out for some pictures. The sun made a brief appearance giving us the chance to put together a special football-themed picture for Hayley’s brother (a professional footballer) who sadly couldn’t make it, all before the rain threatened to spoil Hayley’s gorgeous dress. The evening saw a lot of dancing, kicked off by Hayley and Hayley’s father Glynn who amazed everyone with a routine which he and Hayley choreographed, followed by Iranian dancing and music played by the great DJ Andy Murphy – you won’t see it here but even I was persuaded by Afshin’s aunties to get up and dance…

Congratulations Hayley & Afshin, thank you for letting me be a part of your day!

Tory & George

Tory and George asked me to photograph their wedding in the charming setting of Shottle Hall in Belper, Derbyshire on the 28th of September. I enjoy any chance to explore venues I’ve not previously worked at and this day would be no exception! Everything about this sunny day was special; their friends had lent their skills to provide amongst other things beautiful handmade shoes, stylish invites and a VW bay window camper van which had travelled from near Brighton to take George to his wedding day. After the service, guests were treated to an afternoon tea followed by some heartfelt, hilarious and at times, tearful speeches. Later in the evening, there was a jazz trio followed by some energetic dancing on a heaving dance floor… If you were here, this would have been THE wedding to end the wedding season on.

Congratulations Tory & George, thank you for letting me be a part of your day!

Southend Barns, West Sussex Wedding Photography ~ Dan Barlow

First dance Southend Barns wedding

Rebecca & Will

This wedding was a little bit different in that I had to travel to the bottom of the country to photograph it in sunny West Sussex. Rebecca and Will held their wedding day at Southend Barns near Chichester and I couldn’t wait to start taking pictures there, not only because the venue is pretty, quaint and elegant, but because Rebecca and Will are such a perfectly matched, chilled couple. The day itself was a scorcher – I reckon easily one of the hottest days of the year so rain was the least of my worries (unlike most days in Manchester) and I expected preparations to be hot, sticky and tense. No such worry – the old dairy buildings kept everything cool and everything was going to plan, remaining that way over the whole day for bride, groom and whole wedding party. Throughout the day, I had no problem finding details to capture in the quiet moments, Rebecca and Will had placed of all sorts of thoughtful things around the barns.  I’m not a fan of photographs  of food uploaded to Pinterest or Flickr, but I had to stop myself from bringing the camera out during the afternoon tea to get shots of the immaculately presented sandwiches, cakes and desserts which kept rolling out of the kitchen! The first dance paved the way for much more dancing. I apologise for putting up two consecutively similar dancing photographs but the sunlight coming thorough one side of the barn was an absolute gift to work with – whoever put a window there was a genius…

Congratulations Rebecca & Will, thank you for letting me be a part of your day!

Highley, Shropshire Garden Wedding Photography ~ Dan Barlow

Garden wedding at The Old Vicarage Highley Shropshire

Becky & Juan

Becky met Juan in Argentina and there they married. But when you have such an internationally dispersed family as Becky and Juan, one wedding just sometimes isn’t enough… Becky and her newly-wed husband Juan travelled halfway around the world to have their second wedding at Becky’s family home in Highley, Shropshire, a very old, characterful place where a tall photographer like myself has to watch out for beams and minute door frames! The place had been transformed for the day with a teepee erected in the garden and a space set out for the service which overlooked the orchard. Becky’s arrival was made even more memorable by appearing in a horse-drawn carriage with her bridesmaids. After a group shot and a few formals, I was then free to take pictures of anything I wanted – Becky and Juan didn’t want any posed photographs and I relished the opportunity to do what I do best: natural, candid images of things unfolding in front of me. That included open-mike speeches, home-made ice cream and trying to photograph one of the fastest children I have ever met…

Congratulations Becky & Juan, thank you for letting me be a part of your day!
