Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens Pre-Wedding Photography ~ Dan Barlow

Shabina & Usman

Shabina & Usman had their autumnal pre-wedding photoshoot at Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens in Didsbury which we did in the late afternoon to get the gorgeous sunset light. They wanted a mixture of posed and unposed portraits but with a strong bias towards the unposed. By reviewing the posed portraits together, they could decide what what was working well for them – entirely what I’d consider to be the key point of a pre-wedding photoshoot.

The following portraits are from the undirected and unposed end of the spectrum; they required minimal direction as we had talked through posing earlier in the session and Shabina & Usman were now comfortable and confident enough to show me what they could do.

Here’s a small selection of Shabina & Usman’s set:

Marie Louise Gardens Pre-Wedding Photoshoot ~ Dan Barlow Photography

Jamie & Huw & Cathy

Jamie and Huw’s reschedule of their pre-wedding photoshoot meant that we got all this gorgeous sunshine to play with on their recent evening photo session at Marie Louise Gardens in Didsbury, as well as the opportunity for me to meet the lovely baby Cathy. Mixing the pre-wedding photoshoot up with a family photoshoot was a great way to see how we will approach the formal portraits at their upcoming wedding, as well as giving Jamie and Huw a precious record of their first child. Click here to read a little more about pre-wedding photoshoots and why I think it’s such an important thing to consider before your wedding day.

After all this warm summer sunlight, I cannot wait for their autumnal Thanksgiving wedding!

Tatton Park Pre-Wedding Photoshoot ~ Dan Barlow

Vanessa & Bob

There’s an old adage which says something like ‘never work with children or animals’ and it’s clearly something said by some joyless crackpot because I always encourage couples with dogs to bring them to their pre-wedding photoshoot – they’re family so why wouldn’t you?! Before their wedding at Great John Street Hotel, Vanessa, Bob and their pup Minne met with me for their pre wedding photoshoot at Tatton Park. It gave us plenty of open space to let Minnie run around while we concentrated on posing and was lovely and private which meant that Vanessa & Bob could relax in front of my camera, see what naturally works for them and see how I work first-hand, just some of the reasons why I offer a pre-wedding photoshoot.

Anwen & Adam’s Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

Anwen & Adam met with me in Manchester city centre for their pre-wedding photoshoot to get a flavour of how I work on a portrait session and to build a bit of photo confidence ahead of their Manchester Town Hall wedding next month. We chose a secluded spot in the Town Hall which meant we could run through posing at their own speed before we planned out how their portrait session would work on the day. We then headed on to The Midland Hotel which will be the second venue of their wedding day, getting to know the building and adding a few more unexpectedly beautiful and dramatic locations for portraiture. Seeing this lovely couple become comfortable enough to choose poses themselves was a wonderful thing to see and allowed me to shoot unobtrusively and keep the photography fun, relaxed and natural.

You can see Anwen & Adam’s wedding day photographs here.

Great John Street Hotel Pre-Wedding Photoshoot ~ Dan Barlow

Sarah & Nick

Sarah and Nick chose to meet me in the opulent surroundings of the Great John Street Hotel where they’ll marry at the end of October. As well as working on the plan for their wedding day around the hotel, we managed to get out and take some photographs. Sarah and Nick showed me what they liked about the Great John Street Hotel which means I can begin to think about how I will incorporate these details into my work. As well as giving them a set of lovely photos, this photoshoot gave Sarah and Nick an opportunity to relax into natural, comfortable poses in from of my camera, build their photo confidence and show them how certain scenes could make amazing photographs.

Sandall Beat Wood Pre-Wedding Photoshoot ~ Dan Barlow

Ashley & Brent’s Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

Ashley, Brent (and Layla their dog) took me along to Sandall Beat Wood for their pre-wedding photoshoot ahead of their wedding later this summer. This secluded spot was chosen by Ashley & Brent as it’s not only peaceful and pretty, but one of Layla’s favourite places. By picking a familiar place, Ashley and Brent could relax a little while we practiced posing and building a bit of photo confidence; as you can see from the photos, there was a lot of messing about and laughter, the best thing for overcoming nerves when having your photo taken!

Hove Seafront Pre-Wedding Photoshoot ~ Dan Barlow

Gemma & Joe’s Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

When you photograph weddings, you always need to stay flexible as anything could (and often does) happen – this means I’m used to a change of plans and Gemma and Joe’s pre-wedding photoshoot is a very good case in point!

The plan was to meet these lovely people north of Brighton at the top of Devil’s Dyke in East Sussex for their photoshoot, but the thick fog meant that Gemma, Joe and I ended up bringing it all the way down to Hove seafront instead. I feel blessed that they made such a good alternate choice because we got to have rows of pretty beach huts, gently rusting promenade shelters and Brighton’s skeletal West Pier in on the photos too!

Arundel, West Sussex Pre-Wedding Photoshoot ~ Dan Barlow

IMG_0504

Louise & Dave’s Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

A wedding dress fitting in Arundel, West Sussex meant that Louise and Dave would be perfectly placed for us to use this historic town as the backdrop for their pre-wedding photoshoot. Arundel is a little further from home for me but having such an attractive setting for photos meant that Louise, Dave and I could get down to the business of enjoying an easy-going and fun photoshoot. We packed a lot in, visiting the River Arun, a 13th Century Friary and some rolling Sussex countryside all in the shadow of that magnificent castle. I cannot wait to photograph this wonderful couple’s wedding later in the month and hope to have as many laughs as I had on this photoshoot!

Castlefield Manchester Pre-Wedding Photoshoot ~ Dan Barlow

Hayley & Steve’s Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

Having seen my last pre-wedding photoshoot in Manchester city centre, Hayley and Steve asked if we could also do theirs somewhere in Manchester; we chose the Castlefield area near Deansgate to take their portraits as it’s bridges, canals and brickwork will stand in strong contrast to the leafy green photographs I’ll be taking at their wedding venue. Steve is an ardent film photographer so I knew he would appreciate it if I brought along an extra camera body loaded with Provia slide film to capture this day, you can see a few of the slide film images at the bottom of this post.

As well as getting some beautiful photographs, our time together meant that Hayley & Steve could relax in front of my camera and see how I work first-hand, just one of the reasons why I offer a pre-wedding photoshoot.

The great thing about slide film is that you can hold it up to a light source and immediately see a miniature version of your photograph; on seeing these at the lab, I couldn’t wait to get them through my scanner and up on here. The ‘look’ of Provia 100F is one which will fit well with Hayley and Steve’s vintage themed wedding and I cannot wait to take a few rolls with me to supplement my digital photos in May.

Manchester City Centre Pre-Wedding Photoshoot ~ Dan Barlow

Liz & Matt’s Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

Liz and Matt got me very excited when they told me their wedding would be taking place in two places I love to visit in Manchester’s city centre: Manchester Art Gallery followed by a reception in Rain Bar. How could I say no?! We decided to plan the pre-wedding photoshoot based around the walk they would be making from the gallery to Rain Bar so we could see what would be possible on this journey; as it turns out, there’d be quite a lot to take in on any of the routes we tried!
I’ll let you in on a secret – Liz and Matt don’t want many posed photos on the day, preferring me to capture the moments of the day as they naturally happen. With this brief in mind, the pre-wedding photoshoot would emulate how they want the photography to work on the day which was a useful insight for us all as well as helping Liz and Matt get comfortable in front of my camera. So here’s a snapshot of what is possible in about 20 minutes – Greek Ionic columns, busy trams, backstreet Chinatown and a view of the tallest building in Manchester. Enjoy!
