The Pinewood Hotel Pre-Wedding Photoshoot ~ Dan Barlow

Rachel & Dom

Rachel & Dom are getting married later this year at The Pinewood Hotel which is where we are for this pre-wedding photoshoot.

They had quickly outlined that they want relaxed, naturally posed photos so we choose secluded spots around the gardens so they felt comfortable to show me what they could do. They quickly relaxed in front of my camera once we had reviewed some of their photos and talked about the process taking place – entirely what I’d consider to be the key point of a pre-wedding photoshoot (as well as getting some superb portraits together!).

Here’s a small selection of Rachel & Dom’s set:

Helly & Andy’s Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

Back at the start of 2015 I ran a competition to win my services for the day; the lucky winners were the lovely Helly and Andy, a pair whose wedding plans sounded so outrageously cool that it had to be them who won. And because their venue isn’t quite finished yet, we decided on this spot around Manchester to squeeze in a pre-wedding photoshoot, regardless of rain or shine.

The metal, brick and industrial feel of this place stands in total contrast to the rural, rustic feel of their wedding venue; the similarity is that it is just as secluded which meant that Helly & Andy could relax in front of my camera, receive some beautiful photographs, see what works for them and see how I work first-hand, just some of the reasons why I offer a pre-wedding photoshoot.

The photos run in time order and you can see how Helly & Andy became more at ease – they were strongly encouraged to mess about and we had a lot of laughs and fun!

You can see Helly & Andy’s wedding photography here.

Great John Street Hotel Pre-Wedding Photoshoot ~ Dan Barlow

Sarah & Nick

Sarah and Nick chose to meet me in the opulent surroundings of the Great John Street Hotel where they’ll marry at the end of October. As well as working on the plan for their wedding day around the hotel, we managed to get out and take some photographs. Sarah and Nick showed me what they liked about the Great John Street Hotel which means I can begin to think about how I will incorporate these details into my work. As well as giving them a set of lovely photos, this photoshoot gave Sarah and Nick an opportunity to relax into natural, comfortable poses in from of my camera, build their photo confidence and show them how certain scenes could make amazing photographs.

Manchester Art Gallery Wedding Photography ~ Dan Barlow

Liz & Matt

Liz & Matt’s fantastic Manchester city centre wedding was one which I’d been looking forward to for quite some time, it was going to be a little different with it’s evening ceremony at Manchester Art Gallery happening after the bridal portraits, in order to launch straight into the reception and partying at Rain Bar later that evening.

Liz and her bridesmaids started the bridal preparations at The Midland Hotel in Manchester’s city centre in the afternoon before Liz went down to the lobby to meet Matt for a ‘first look’. This gave us a chance to take a little longer on the bridal portraits than we would’ve otherwise been able to do and it also took a whole load of pressure out of the day knowing they were done! There were no less than two drinks receptions: one at the The Midland Hotel then one prior to the service in Manchester Art Gallery; then, it was time for the ceremony.

After the ceremony and group photos in the lobby, there was just enough time for a few more photographs outside in ‘The Lost Gardens of Manchester’ before a short walk to Rain bar. This walk to the reception yielded even more photo opportunities and Liz literally held up traffic for the photo on the road into Manchester’s Chinatown! At Rain Bar, there were speeches, dancing, many cakes and then a whole lot more dancing; you can see how much fun everyone had throughout the photos below, right until the very end of the night!

Congratulations Liz & Matt, thank you for letting me be a part of your day!

Amanda & Simon’s Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

Amanda & Simon met with me in Manchester city centre for their pre-wedding photoshoot to get a flavour of how I work on a portrait session and to build a bit of photo confidence ahead of their Lake District wedding in the summer. Starting in a secluded spot around Castlefield meant we could run through posing at their own speed before heading further into Manchester on a route which led to the beautiful photos you see below. It was also great to see this lovely couple become comfortable enough to choose poses themselves, allowing me to shoot unobtrusively and keep the photography fun, relaxed and natural.

Gemma & Joe’s Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

When you photograph weddings, you always need to stay flexible as anything could (and often does) happen – this means I’m used to a change of plans and Gemma and Joe’s pre-wedding photoshoot is a very good case in point!

The plan was to meet these lovely people north of Brighton at the top of Devil’s Dyke in East Sussex for their photoshoot, but the thick fog meant that Gemma, Joe and I ended up bringing it all the way down to Hove seafront instead. I feel blessed that they made such a good alternate choice because we got to have rows of pretty beach huts, gently rusting promenade shelters and Brighton’s skeletal West Pier in on the photos too!

You can see Gemma & Joe’s wedding photography here.

Louise & Dave’s Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

A wedding dress fitting in Arundel, West Sussex meant that Louise and Dave would be perfectly placed for us to use this historic town as the backdrop for their pre-wedding photoshoot. Arundel is a little further from home for me but having such an attractive setting for photos meant that Louise, Dave and I could get down to the business of enjoying an easy-going and fun photoshoot. We packed a lot in, visiting the River Arun, a 13th Century Friary and some rolling Sussex countryside all in the shadow of that magnificent castle. I cannot wait to photograph this wonderful couple’s wedding later in the month and hope to have as many laughs as I had on this photoshoot!

Kaz & Jon’s Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

Here’s a little selection from Kaz & Jon’s pre-wedding photoshoot at The Pinewood where they’ll be getting married later this year. Visiting the wedding venue provided us with time to fine tune their wedding photography plans and gave us a great feel for how we’ll use the outdoor space on the day; it also helped Kaz & Jon to build a bit of camera confidence
The stunning blossom budding on the trees was an unexpectedly welcome sight and knew it would be a beautiful backdrop, unique to this time of year.

The Village Hotel, Manchester Ashton Wedding Photography ~ Dan Barlow

IMG_9251

Katey & Craig

Katey & Craig’s wedding day began with bridal preparations at their home with plenty of action to photograph as the house was alive with family and the sound of Katey’s daughter and niece playing and looking super-cute in their matching bridesmaid (or ‘princess’) dresses! I spend a fair amount of time photographing shoes, dresses, jewellery and other details over the morning of a wedding but nothing prepares you for how amazing a bride looks when these elements all come together – Katey simply looked wonderful in her beautiful dress.
Following the service at St James the Great church in Westhaughton, there was a quick drive to The Village Hotel in Ashton to first capture some of the many lovingly made details adorning the reception room: more local flowers, sweet little bags of happiness and a wedding cake with a pattern which matched the lacework on Katey’s dress. The attention to detail was incredible.
Craig was immaculately presented in his No.1 dress uniform which was the perfect paring with Katey’s stunning dress – just take a look at the portraits further down this post to see what I mean.

Congratulations Katey & Craig, thank you for letting me be a part of your day!

Castlefield Manchester Pre-Wedding Photoshoot ~ Dan Barlow

Hayley & Steve’s Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

Having seen my last pre-wedding photoshoot in Manchester city centre, Hayley and Steve asked if we could also do theirs somewhere in Manchester; we chose the Castlefield area near Deansgate to take their portraits as it’s bridges, canals and brickwork will stand in strong contrast to the leafy green photographs I’ll be taking at their wedding venue. Steve is an ardent film photographer so I knew he would appreciate it if I brought along an extra camera body loaded with Provia slide film to capture this day, you can see a few of the slide film images at the bottom of this post.

As well as getting some beautiful photographs, our time together meant that Hayley & Steve could relax in front of my camera and see how I work first-hand, just one of the reasons why I offer a pre-wedding photoshoot.

You can see Hayley & Steve’s wedding photography here.

The great thing about slide film is that you can hold it up to a light source and immediately see a miniature version of your photograph; on seeing these at the lab, I couldn’t wait to get them through my scanner and up on here. The ‘look’ of Provia 100F is one which will fit well with Hayley and Steve’s vintage themed wedding and I cannot wait to take a few rolls with me to supplement my digital photos in May.
